Preparing for Your Skin Check

Simple preparation can help ensure a thorough and accurate assessment. Before your appointment;
Remove all jewellery
Do not have painted/covered nails
Do not wear fake tan
Avoid underwear such as sports bras or large boxer shorts as these cover too much skin.
If you have thick hair, ask you hairdresser if they notice any skin lesions on your scalp and take a note of where they are
Examine your genital area and breasts. If you see any skin lesions in these areas, please let the clinic know prior to your appointment.
AI-Assisted Skin Checks
Although we have implemented AI into two parts of our comprehensive skin cancer screen, it is important to always see the skin cancer doctor in conjuction with the scan. During this part of the screen, any unpigmented lesions, or those in hard to reach areas, will be examined and imaged by the doctor. As this consult, the doctor will also arrange the full management plan of any concerning lesions in-house, so that you don't need to worry.
Does the SkinScan appointment provide the diagnosis?
No. SkinScan is a powerful tracking tool. It supports our clinicians by highlighting any new or changing lesions before they are visible to the human eye. During you consultation the doctor may use AIMEE AI to assist in skin cancer diagnosis, but the final conclusion is always made by the doctor.
How can different types of AI augment a skin cancer screen?
At Dermatology Doctors we have invested in both AI-assisted mole mapping (SkinScan) for the most accurate detection of changing lesions, and AI assisted diagnosis (AIMEE). Clinical studies have shown that AI has a higher sensitivity than expert dermatologists in detecting melanoma. When combined with expert clinician assessment, it gives you the most advanced skin cancer detection available in New Zealand.
Will my insurance cover the cost of the skin cancer screen?
Please check your health insurance cover.
For skin cancer screeening and lesion of concern consultations;
Insurance cover for lesions of concern is provided by many insurers (including Southern Cross Insurance, AIA, and Partners Life) as well as for treatments (liquid nitrogen or lesion removal) performed by our Dermatology Doctors.
Southern Cross Insurance covers doctor lead skin cancer screen examinations and treatment for patients with Melanoma (lifetime), BCC and SCC (3 years). However, cover is not always provided for the SkinScan part of the comprehensive skin cancer screen.
Entitlement and the amount covered will be in accordance with individual policies.
For medical dermatology, Mohs surgery and hair loss consultations;
these are usually fully covered by your insurance provider as they are performed by specialist dermatologists. The exception is the acne clinic ran by Dr Kate Matthews as she is a GP with a special interest in acne.
Dermatology Doctors provides patients with a full receipt for patient submission to their insurer.
